Benefits of Reiki

Life force energy also known as chi, flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy.

Reiki treatment increases your supply of life force energy and helps you heal quickly. It promotes relaxation, makes you feel at peace, and reduces your stress. Once you start moving toward your unique physical, mental, and spiritual balance, your body's own healing mechanisms begin to function more effectively.

Reiki is first referred to in the Sanskrit writings of 2500 years ago. The tradition was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui in the nineteenth century, who implemented the Usui System of Natural Healing. Dr Mikao Usui was believed to be a Christian Priest and a director of a Japanese university, who also studied at a Buddhist monastery. Following a twenty-one day meditation and fast on a holy mountain, he experienced a life-altering experience in which a light from the sky struck him on the forehead. This enabled him to enter a state of deep consciousness in which he saw the Symbols from the Sanskrit sutras, their application and mantras, and he felt a powerful healing force. Following this powerful enlightenment experience, Usui found that he could promote rapid physical healing, and he felt compelled to heal the poor in the slums of Kyoto. From this experience he developed the Reiki rules for life.

After Dr Usui’s death, his chosen successor was Dr Chujiro Hayashi, who trained and treated at a clinic in Tokyo. Hayashi documented evidence of Reiki’s success, and also trained a Japanese woman named Hawayo Takata as his successor, after healing her from a serious disorder. History suggests that Hayashi and his students were all killed in World War Two. As Hayashi’s successor, Takata initiated twenty-two Reiki masters, and adapted the teaching to suit Western students. Thus Reiki healing was gradually introduced to the Western world, using a series of twelve hand positions held for five minutes each.

The term Reiki refers to two Japanese syllables; Rei meaning universal wisdom, and ki meaning life force energy. The intention of Reiki is to absorb more life force energy to revitalize and heal the self. The Reiki practitioner acts as a channel to transmit the Universal Energy of Life to the client. It is believed that Reiki improves on whatever the individual needs the most, by balancing the energies of the body and healing. Emotionally, blocks will be released and suppressed feelings accepted.

The Reiki symbols and mantras are used to vibrate specific chakras. The word Chakra means ‘wheel’ in Sanskrit, as each of the Chakras (situated along the spine) are spinning energy wheels of light, connected to the body’s endocrine system. In Reiki there are seven main chakras which need to be in balance for overall peak health. There are also more than twenty other minor chakras.

The seven main Chakras are:-

  1. Root (first, red)
  2. Sacral (second, orange)
  3. Solar Plexus (third, yellow)
  4. Heart (fourth, green)
  5. Throat (fifth, blue)
  6. Third Eye (sixth, indigo)
  7. Crown (seventh, purple)

Each Chakra has an energy flow, and if there is an imbalance, this can lead to disease and disorders. The Chakras each have corresponding body parts that are affected by such imbalances and blockages. Therefore each physical ailment indicates a specific Chakra problem. The intention of Reiki is to balance out and harmonise all seven Chakras for optimum physical and mental health. When a Chakra is healthy, so are its associated body parts, if it is blocked or damaged, the health of the connected body parts will reflect this. The interaction between the Chakras and the endocrine system affects the physical, energetic and psychological effects of the healing process. The endocrine system regulates hormone and metabolism, bringing vital energy to the human body.

Reiki is based on the belief that our bodies are filled with life-force energy which is directly linked to the state of our health. A person must maintain, or top up, the amount of life-force energy in the body for healthy growth and renewal of cells. Other holistic therapies contribute towards the quality of health, aswell as good diet and exercise.

Reiki complements other holistic treatments and can be used in combination with other therapies.
